This year at the Salt Lake Tribune Home and Garden Show, Joanie Sprague joins the lineup of celebrity guests! You may recognize Joanie as a runner up on America’s Next Top Model or from DIY Network’s Run My Renovation and Man Caves. Joanie has experience in the fashion world, but also stands out for her home improvement and carpentry skills. Most notably, she will soon appear on the revival of TLC’s famous show Trading Spaces!

We caught up with Joanie ahead of her Design Stage presentations to snag some early tips. Check out Joanie's top five DIY and home improvement tips:

1. Closets are a simple project most people can handle on their own. If you need more space, you can go to any home improvement store and create your dream closet based on your needs and install it yourself.

2. Window treatments are always worth it! Spend a little more money on curtains that won’t get sun bleached over time and that will match with any décor as you continue to change your space.

3. When it comes to owning a home, spending more up front will benefit you in the long run. Opt for higher quality products and materials when it comes to floors, decks, and tiles. They will last much longer, saving you time and money in the end.

4. Consult a professional builder or engineer before diving into a renovation project! Tearing out walls prematurely can cause major structural issues, and it can be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re getting into.

5. Re-upholstering a couch or chair is worth the work if it has a good structure. Make sure you are purchasing quality fabrics and using a good powered staple gun to upholster.

Catch Joanie Sprague on the Design Stage Friday, March 9th at 3pm, Saturday, March 10th at 11am and 8pm, and Sunday, March 11th at noon. Don't have tickets yet? Pick up yours online to save $2 and start planning your visit to the show. We can't wait to see you there!
